A kitchen fire at a townhouse near Hintonburg Tuesday caused $100,000 in damages and left one resident displaced, Ottawa Fire Services said.
Fire Services received a call at 3:23 p.m. to a unit in a five-unit, three storey townhouse on 216 Forward Avenue near the intersection of Parkdale Avenue and Scott Street.
Marc Messier, Fire Services spokesperson, said the fire started near or in a microwave and spread into the ceiling. Firefighters had to open up walls and the ceiling leading to the attic to put out hot spots.
The fire was under control by 3:40 p.m.
Messier said the owner’s mother was visiting at the time and was not injured. The owner wasn’t home at the time, but was displaced.
Damages are estimated at $70,000 to the unit and $30,000 to its contents.
The cause is under investigation.
